Ursula K. Le Guin coined the term "handmind" in her book Always Coming Home.
She writes, " It was a good thing for me to learn a craft with a true maker. It may have been the best thing I have done. Nothing we do is better than the work of handmind. When mind uses itself without the hands it runs the circle and may go too fast; even speech using the voice only may go too fast. The hand that shapes the mind into clay or written word slows thought to the gait of things and lets it be subject to accident and time."
It is this idea that is behind the idea for art and making as tools for wellbeing. You can read a bit more about this in an article by Alan Jacobs over at The Hedgehog Review.
You can look forward to hands-on sessions in weaving, printmaking, fiber arts, simple woodworking, and more. I’ll personally teach some of these workshops, and we’ll also feature talented local artists and makers who bring their unique skills and perspectives to the table.
Our offerings include both one-time gatherings and multi-session series, so you can choose the format that works best for your schedule and creative goals. Whether you're looking to learn something new, connect with a community of creators, or deepen your artistic practice, our workshops are designed with you in mind. Beneath it all will be the aim at experiencing handmind.
The cost will vary depending on the teacher and the materials needed. Everything will be supplied. These classes will have accessibility at the heart of the pricing.
You can expect sessions to begin in early Spring of 2025. There will be a calendar of regular offerings made available, and other opportunities to slide into handmind through art and making will pop up as teachers become available.
Very possibly!
If you are interested in offering an art or making workshop, let's get together and talk about it. I'll ask about your work, your teaching experience, and your expectations. I'm glad to offer mentorship to those who've not taught before or want to enhance their teaching.
Shoot me an email, and we'll find a time!
